The light installation Zick Zack marks the entrance to the transforming Hochbord neighbourhood near the Stettbach railway station, at the Zurich-Dübendorf border.
Zick Zack is made up of two parts: a sculpture on the roof and a light grid above the main entrance. Every day over the course of a month, the installation on the roof displays one of 31 different colourful images in random mode. The sculpture wakes up at 6 a.m., making a radiant impression in the early dawn. By day, only the installation’s shape is generally seen, but depending on the weather, a shimmering of lights becomes visible. At dusk, Zick Zack again makes a colourful appearance until the lights are switched off at 10 p.m.
The light grid over the building’s main entrance presents itself in a different form for each day of the week; for 16 hours, geometric stills and, at the full hour, a brief moving image, become part of the local scenery.
Zick Zack echoes the rhythm of the busy urban area, greeting the streams of commuters at the Stettbach station as they emerge from the underground platforms as well as the many people who come and go by tram, bus, car, bicycle or on foot.
